The Making of Rat Attack

Type: 3D Action Adventure

Welcome to our first fortnightly look at the trials and tribulations of the development of 'Rat Attack', a new game from the guys at Pure Entertainment.

Washington and Jefferson
by Pure's Harry Holmwood

The names Washington and Jefferson - mean anything to you? Of course, they were the two rats sent into outer space in the early 50s. . . the first creatures ever to orbit the earth. The mission was a complete success. . . or was it?

In fact, those roving rodents were kidnapped by alien beings, given new mutant brains and IQs higher than Einstein and Ken Kuteragi combined! Watch out. . . they're coming back to earth, empowering the world's rat population with an attempt to take over the universe!!!

In 'Rat Attack', you become one of the Scratch Cats, an elite band of feline fighters destined to save the earth from the evil clutches of Washington and Jefferson. Everywhere you look, you see rats - they're jumping on furniture, flooding the bath, setting fire to the sofa. . . you've just got to put a stop to it! Armed only with your trusty Eraticator, you must eliminate the rodent menace before it's too late.

Rat Attack is as much a multi-player game as a single player one. . . but we'll be revealing more about the gameplay over the next few months. For now, let's see how the team are doing. . .

The game is now up and running and has the cats and rats running manically around doing their own thing. Thanks to Weeksy, the graphics programmer, the engine belts along at a very smooth 50 frames per second, in high resolution mode. Pat, the main gameplay programmer has something of a crisis on his hands - he broke two fingers last week and is typing at half speed. . . apparently it 'just doesn't feel right with your left hand'. Quite.

Also on the team is Steve who's just finished the fastest CD loading code you've ever seen (you won't ever see the dreaded 'LOADING. . . PLEASE WAIT' screen in Rat Attack) as well as producer Damian and level designer Robin. Creating the artwork we have Phil (the creator of the Scratch Cats) and Steve (most famous for his work on the legendary 'Jive Bunny' video). You'll be seeing a lot more of their work soon. . .
